The Pilot Plant Technologist supports pilot plant and laboratory operations by ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable execution of research and process activities. This role partners with scientists, engineers, and technicians to support technology development, troubleshoot process issues, improve operational performance, and promote a strong culture of safety and continuous learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the safe and efficient operation of assigned pilot plant areas.
- Coordinate and perform operational tasks, including field checks, equipment preparation, sample collection, and process monitoring.
- Troubleshoot process deviations and operational issues while supporting root cause investigations and corrective actions.
- Lead responses to process upsets and coordinate activities with technicians as needed.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on process performance, equipment reliability, and operating discipline.
- Develop, update, and maintain operating procedures, work instructions, and technical documentation.
- Analyze operational data to optimize process control, asset utilization, production yields, and operating costs.
- Coordinate equipment troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs.
- Collaborate with engineers and leadership to plan plant turnarounds and support special projects.
- Mentor and support the development of technicians by identifying training needs and sharing technical expertise.
- Participate in Training Review Boards and contribute to training evaluations and approvals.
- Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with Life Critical Standards and serving as a role model for safe work practices.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related technical field (or equivalent local education requirements).
- Strong knowledge of laboratory or pilot plant operations, process equipment, and safety practices.
- Ability to troubleshoot operational and process-related issues using established procedures.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, and cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree combined with relevant industrial, laboratory, or pilot plant experience.
- Experience supporting process improvement, equipment troubleshooting, and operational excellence initiatives.
- Previous experience in chemical manufacturing, research, or pilot plant environments.
- Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to less experienced team members.
